Discordant society is obviously an ironic re-claiming of Hu Jintao’s famous “harmonious society.” But this choice was not motivated simply by a desire to kick dirt in the face of the Chinese state. Rather, I think that there is some analytical substance to the phrase, and I think that it can shed light on re-aligned class politics in reform-era China and the state’s current strategy of domination.
